Detroit and the surrounding region constitute a major center of commerce and global trade, most notably as home to America's 'Big Three' automobile companies, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler.

A number of luxury high rises have been built in Downtown Detroit and there are plans for more luxury Condominium developments.  This is bringing more younger residents to the city and a 2007 study found that Detroit's new Downtown is predominantly young professionals.
